NATURE OF WORK The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled work repairing and maintaining paved and unpaved parking and landside surfaces, hangars, and various mechanical devices. Work also involves semi-skilled labor required to perform a variety of duties necessary to maintain airport properties, operating and mechanical systems, building services, and landside ground services, using a variety of light and heavy construction equipment, power and hand tools. The work responsibilities are: repairs and maintains a variety of light and heavy construction and related equipment; operates trucks and related automotive equipment; repairs and maintains a variety of mechanical devices; performs various maintenance tasks; assigns and directs the work of custodial technicians in the absence of the supervisor. Employees in this class report to the Terminal Maintenance Supervisor.
WORK RESPONSIBILITIES: The following list of work responsibilities was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned.
Repairs and maintains a variety of light and heavy construction and related equipment to include tractors, lawn mowers, light and heavy trucks, sweeper truck, road grader, backhoe, weed eater, chainsaws and related equipment using basic mechanical and hand tools following safety precautions and procedures in order to maintain equipment in proper operating condition.
Operates automotive and related heavy equipment to pave surfaces, cut grass, haul dirt, gravel and asphalt, adhering to standard industry and airport safety and security policies and procedures in order to clean, repair and maintain airfield areas.
Repairs and maintains a variety of mechanical devices such as automatic gates, generator, runway and taxiway lights, and related systems using basic mechanical and hand tools following standard industry and airport safety and security policies and procedures in order to ensure efficient operations of the facility.
Performs various maintenance tasks, to include carpentry, plumbing, painting and electrical repairs using saw, drill, grinder, ohm meter, paint striping machine, paint, and various hand tools following industry standards in order to maintain airfield grounds and properties.
Assigns and directs the work of custodial technicians in the absence of the Terminal Maintenance Supervisor and serves as lead worker for a small group of employees when directed, following departmental policies and procedures in order to ensure completion of projects in a timely manner.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of electric systems and controls as needed to isolate problems, repair and maintain electrical equipment and systems.
Knowledge of basic carpentry, painting, electrical and plumbing methods and materials as needed to construct, maintain and/or repair Airport properties and equipment.
Knowledge of the maintenance and repair of asphalt, concrete, dirt and gravel surfaces as needed to maintain various types of surface areas.
Knowledge of the proper and safe operation and maintenance of airport vehicles and equipment used in airfield maintenance activities.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions used in repairing and maintaining electrical and mechanical systems and equipment.
Knowledge of FAA and Airport Authority Rules and Regulations pertaining to the maintenance and security of airport runways, taxiways, lighting and surrounding approaches.
Skill in operating a variety of light and heavy automotive and maintenance equipment as needed to perform airfield maintenance tasks.
Skill in diagnosing and repairing defects in gas and diesel engines and related mechanical systems and equipment as needed to perform repairs and maintenance on equipment.
Skill in the care and use of hand and power tools used to repair and maintain vehicles and equipment.
Ability to repair and maintain a variety of light and heavy vehicles and equipment used in grounds and street maintenance.
Ability to read and understand written instructions, repair manuals and equipment specifications as needed to understand work request, perform maintenance and/or repair tasks.
Ability to communicate orally as needed to explain problems with equipment, necessary repairs, and use two-way radio or telephone.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, airport tenants, customers and the public as needed to coordinate and complete work projects.
Ability to work outside in extreme temperatures, rain, wind, dusty and dirty conditions as needed to perform the essential functions of the job.
Ability to assign and direct the work of other employees and to take corrective action as needed to oversee project completion.
Ability to instruct workers by demonstrating proper methods, practices, or short cuts or by providing verbal instruction as needed to improve and enhance the skills and performance of workers.
Physical abilities to walk, stoop, bend, crawl and climb as needed to perform maintenance task or to instruct employees.
Physical ability to lift weight up to 50 pounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to work in various weather conditions such as rain, extreme heat and/or cold. Must be willing to be “on-call” on the week of your shift. Must be able to work nights and weekends. Must submit to a 5-year employment and criminal background check to include fingerprinting in order to satisfy Federal Aviation Administration requirements. Must have and maintain a valid Alabama Driver's License and an insurable driving record.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED equivalent and five (5) years of experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of light and heavy automotive and construction equipment, preferably in terminal maintenance; supplemented by or including one year of lead worker experience.
