Position Summary
Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM) is seeking a detail-oriented Airport Operations Specialist to help ensure the safe, secure, and efficient daily operation of the airport. This entry-level position manages the use of airport facilities in accordance with established policies and federal regulations, including Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Parts 77 and 139 and Transportation Security Regulation (TSR) Part 1542.
Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, the Specialist conducts airfield and facility inspections, monitors radio communications and flight operations, coordinates construction and tenant activities, and delivers a high level of customer service to the public, airport stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.
Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate airport operations during the assigned shift, ensuring the safety and security of the public, tenants, and airport staff.
  • Conduct periodic, daily, and continuous inspections of runways, taxiways, and other facilities to identify, document, and report damage, deterioration, debris, and other unsafe or non-compliant conditions.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with FAR Part 139, Part 77, TSR Part 1542, the Airport Certification Manual, Airport Minimum Standards, Rules and Regulations, and the Airport Security Program.
  • Issue and file Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs), promptly communicating any conditions that affect safe aircraft operations to the FAA, air carriers, and other airport users.
  • Monitor two-way radio communications among airport staff, flight operations, air traffic control (ATC), and emergency personnel.
  • Coordinate use of airport facilities by air carrier, air cargo, military, and charter operators alongside Fixed Base Operator (FBO) and above-/below-wing handling personnel, including training and testing employees on proper procedures.
  • Assist in coordinating and monitoring airport construction activities.
  • Monitor and ensure safe vehicle operations in movement and non-movement areas.
  • Help implement wildlife control procedures in compliance with the Airport’s Wildlife Hazard Management Plan and applicable regulations.
  • Provide a high level of customer service in responding to questions from the public, airport stakeholders, and governmental regulatory agencies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Airport or Aviation/Aerospace Management, Aviation/Aerospace Science, Business or Public Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe, or other applicable software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in airport operations or administration, or in a directly aviation-relevant role such as an FBO, airline, air cargo carrier, airfield maintenance, or airport emergency services.
  • Possession of a Private Pilot Certificate or Airport Security Coordinator (ASC) Certification.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to learn and apply FAR Part 139, TSR Part 1542, and other federal, state, and local rules governing aviation, airport safety, security, and airfield operations and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the practices and principles of airport administration, operations, security, and airfield maintenance, including inspection of buildings, grounds, and airfields.
  • Ability to enforce compliance with regulations and established programs.
  • Ability to multitask, exercise independent judgment, act decisively, and respond effectively in emergency situations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver effective reports and presentations.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with airport tenants, employees, and the public, and to work well in a group setting.
  • Proficiency with word-processing, spreadsheet, and database software to collect, compile, analyze, and report data.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Climb, sit, stand, and walk for extended periods throughout daily activities; lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Read runway friction measurements and visually detect damage, deterioration, or defects in airport structures and fixtures that could affect safe aircraft operations.
  • Decipher radio communications and hear alarms, warning signals, and vehicle motion signals.
  • Tolerate noise levels up to 120 decibels and work in close proximity to 480-volt power sources.
  • Drive to various locations on and off airport premises.
Special Requirements
  • Must be willing to work rotating shifts that may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and any subsequent drug screen tests.
  • Must meet the requirements to obtain and maintain unescorted access to the Security Identification Display Area (SIDA).
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
