Position Summary
The Airport Police Sergeant is a sworn law enforcement officer responsible for supervising and coordinating the activities of Airport Police Officers and Security personnel. This position ensures the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws, as well as airport regulations, while maintaining the safety and security of the Montgomery Regional Airport. The Sergeant provides leadership in daily operations, emergency response, investigations, and interagency collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise, direct, and coordinate Airport Police Officers and Security Officers in daily operations
- Patrol airport property to enforce laws, regulations, and safety standards
- Respond to calls for service, security breaches, and emergency incidents
- Conduct and oversee preliminary and follow-up investigations
- Review, approve, and ensure accuracy of reports prepared by subordinate personnel
- Provide training, guidance, and performance oversight for assigned staff
- Coordinate with local, state, and federal agencies, including TSA
- Conduct security assessments and recommend improvements to airport safety procedures
- Monitor passenger and baggage screening operations
- Ensure proper deployment and use of law enforcement equipment and resources
- Provide security support for dignitaries, tenants, and the traveling public
- Testify in court and assist with internal investigations when required
- Supervise operations during special events, incidents, or multi-agency task forces
- Conduct perimeter and terminal patrols to deter criminal activity and ensure compliance
Qualifications
Required Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong understanding of law enforcement principles, procedures, and airport security regulations
- Knowledge of arrest laws, evidence handling, and investigative procedures
- Effective leadership and supervisory skills
- Ability to analyze situations and make sound decisions quickly
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse and high-security environment
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years of full-time experience as:
- An Airport Police Corporal with Montgomery Regional Airport Authority OR
- A sworn Corporal (or higher) with a local, county, or state law enforcement agency
- Experience must include supervisory, operational, and investigative responsibilities
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid Alabama Driver’s License (required at time of hire)
- Basic POST Certification (required prior to appointment)
- Must complete an APOST-approved supervisory course after hire
Additional Requirements
- Successful completion of a one-year probationary period
- Ability to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to respond to emergency and high-risk situations
