Nature of WorkThe fundamental reason this position exists is to manage and supervise the Airport Police Department and all aviation security related matters in support of the Airport Security Program. The work responsibilities include planning, organizing and directing airport security and law enforcement functions as approved by the Executive Director, supervising up to 20 police officers, monitoring operators and clerical personnel, and coordinating airport security regulatory compliance matters. The Airport Police Chief works from broadly-defined administrative directives and reports to the Deputy Airport Director and/ or Executive Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are representative of the work performed. Additional duties may be assigned as needed:
- Plans, directs, and administer all operations of Airport Police Department
- Oversees the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws within airport jurisdiction.
- Ensures compliance with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Airport Security Program and related federal aviation security regulations, including 49 CFR Part 1542.
- Serves as or supports the role of Airport Security Coordinator (ASC) and acts as the primary liaison with TSA, FAA, Department of Homeland Security, and other regulatory agencies.
- Develops and implements airport emergency response plans and coordinates law enforcement responses to security incidents, emergencies, and criminal activities.
- Supervises and evaluates sworn police officers and support personnel, including assigning work, monitoring performance, and administering discipline when necessary.
- Oversees recruitment, training, and professional development of departmental personnel.
- Develops departmental policies, procedures, and operational strategies to ensure effective law enforcement and security operations.
- Coordinates with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies on joint operations, investigations, and security initiatives.
- Oversees criminal investigations, incident reporting, and evidence management processes.
- Prepares and administers departmental budgets and monitors expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility.
- Monitors airport facilities and operations to identify potential security risks and implement mitigation strategies
- Represents the Airport Authority in security planning meetings, regulatory inspections, and interagency coordination activities.
- Ensures readiness for TSA audits, inspections, and regulatory compliance reviews
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a closely related degree and ten (10) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience and five (5) years of command-level leadership experience.
Airport law enforcement experience is desired.
NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Special Requirements
- Must meet the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOST) Continuing Education Unit requirements for certification as a law enforcement officer in the State of Alabama. Must maintain the certification throughout employment.
- Must submit to a 5-year employment background check to satisfy Federal Aviation Administration requirements, a Criminal History Records Check, and a Transport Security Assessment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama Drivers License.
- Must successfully secure Airport Security Coordinator (ASC) designation within 6 months.
Work may require responding to emergency situations and performing law enforcement duties in various environments. Physical activities many include standing, walking, patrolling airport facilities, operating law enforcement equipment, and responding to security incidents.
